Advanced UAV Programs

Advanced UAV development accelerated in 1994 with General Atomics' GNAT 750 program.¹ The CIA and Air Force sought persistent surveillance capabilities without risking pilot lives.²

  Program Structure

Multiple contractors developed specialized platforms. General Atomics created the Predator and Reaper series.³ Lockheed Martin developed DarkStar and Sentinel.⁴ Northrop Grumman produced Global Hawk.⁵

  Technical Capabilities

The GNAT 750 demonstrated 48-hour endurance at 25,000 feet.⁶ Predator achieved 40-hour flights at 25,000 feet with advanced sensors.⁷ Global Hawk reached 65,000 feet with 32-hour endurance.⁸ The RQ-170 Sentinel incorporated stealth features for penetrating defended airspace.⁹
