Michael Herrera is publicly known as a former U.S. Marine who alleges that a six-Marine detail encountered a large octagonal craft during the October 2009 West Sumatra relief mission.12 Official Marine Corps, Navy, and USGS records support the disaster-relief setting, while the alleged craft, armed confrontation, media confiscation, and forced nondisclosure agreement remain unverified by public physical evidence or named public corroborators.23456
Military Background and Relief Setting
Herrera's written account identifies him as a Marine with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Echo Company, 2nd Platoon, embarked aboard USS Denver with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit during the 2009 relief response.1 The 31st MEU's official year-in-review says BLT 2/5 replaced BLT 3/5 as the ground combat element before the fall patrol and that a smaller 31st MEU force deployed aboard USS Denver for humanitarian assistance after the September 30, 2009 Indonesia earthquake.3 The same Marine Corps account says CH-53E helicopters from HMM-265 moved more than 130,000 pounds of food, tools, shelter, and other supplies in affected regions.3 A Navy NewsStand release reported that USS Denver and USS McCampbell arrived offshore near Padang and began helicopter relief flights to remote Western Sumatra on October 9, 2009.4 The USGS described the September 30 event as a magnitude 7.6 earthquake near Padang and Pariaman, with Indonesian estimates of 1,195 deaths and severe damage to houses and buildings.5 DailyMail.com reported that Herrera provided a four-year service record and messages with an alleged fellow witness, but it also stated that he had no documentation or photographs of the claimed encounter itself.2
Alleged Indonesia Encounter
In Herrera's written testimony, he says his six-Marine group boarded a CH-53, briefly touched down at a small runway near Padang, and then landed farther north to secure an aid-related position near a ridge.1 He says the team lacked communications, moved down the slope to investigate a rotating color-changing object, and that he recorded photos or video on a Panasonic camera before closing to roughly 50 meters.1 He describes armed men in black uniforms with M4-pattern weapons, body armor, sidearms, and a scanning device, and he says they pointed weapons at the Marines, took identification cards, cleared their rifles, and threatened to kill them.1 He reports seeing matte-black trucks, large weapon cases, and a trailer-mounted container moving onto a platform beneath the object before the platform and craft joined into one vehicle.1 Herrera describes the object as octagonal, dark, scale-like, and pyramid-topped, with colored lights, a low hum, and a departure toward the ocean that he estimated at 3,000 to 4,000 miles per hour without sonic-boom or rotor-wash effects.1 He says the men released the Marines after further threats, and that later his camera was returned without its memory card or battery while other Marines' phones were missing.1 He further alleges that after returning to Camp Hansen, an unnamed Air Force lieutenant colonel forced him to sign a TS/SCI nondisclosure agreement related to Padang and told him not to speak about the event.1
Public Disclosure and Interview Record
Herrera's account surfaced publicly in June 2023 through DailyMail.com and the Disclosure Project orbit, after he said recent UAP reporting protections encouraged him to approach AARO and Senate staff.72 Greer's site published Herrera's written ARV testimony in August 2023 and linked it to the June 12, 2023 National Press Club event, which was an advocacy press conference rather than the official July 2023 House UAP hearing.78 The official July 26, 2023 House Oversight UAP hearing listed Ryan Graves, David Grusch, and David Fravor as witnesses, not Herrera.8 Herrera later repeated and expanded the story in long-form public interviews, including an August 2023 Shawn Ryan Show episode and an August 2025 Reality Check episode with Ross Coulthart.910 Those interviews placed the Indonesia claim inside a broader black-program narrative involving alleged trafficking, private contractors, and AARO or Senate interactions, but the interviews themselves did not publish physical evidence for the encounter.910
Corroboration and Limits
The independently documented parts of the dossier are narrower than the extraordinary parts: the earthquake, U.S. relief operation, USS Denver presence, 31st MEU role, CH-53 flights, and BLT 2/5 context are externally supported.345 The central claims about a hovering craft, armed clandestine personnel, confiscated imagery, and a coerced TS/SCI agreement depend on Herrera's own testimony and the public reporting that he supplied service records and a reluctant-witness text.12 DailyMail.com reported peripheral verification and a same-unit sender for the text exchange, but no cited public source names the other Marines or releases the original imagery, flight logs, radio records, alleged NDA, or any official finding validating the encounter.26 AARO's 2024 historical report provides an aggregate evidentiary boundary, stating that it found no empirical evidence for claims that the U.S. Government or private companies had reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology.6 A cautious reading should therefore separate the documented relief-operation setting from the alleged clandestine craft operation, because only the first category is independently supported by official public records.3456
Assessment
Herrera's testimony is detailed and specific enough to document as a claimed first-person UAP encounter, but the public record does not currently establish the craft, the covert operators, the threats, or the trafficking interpretation as verified facts.126 The most meaningful future corroboration would be named squad-member statements, deck logs, helicopter flight records, imagery metadata, AARO or Senate records, or the alleged NDA, none of which appear in the public source set cited here.1268 Until that evidentiary gap changes, Herrera's importance is as a public claimant within the post-2023 UAP whistleblower ecosystem, not as an independently corroborated witness to a proven covert craft operation.72689
