ODNI's 2022 Annual Report on UAP is the unclassified public version of an annual report to Congress required by the FY 2022 NDAA; ODNI published it on January 12, 2023 after submitting a classified version to Congress.123
Use it as the official bridge between ODNI's June 25, 2021 preliminary assessment and the later AARO annual-report series.45 It covers UAP reporting since the preliminary assessment's March 5, 2021 information cutoff, adds 247 new reports and 119 older or late-discovered reports, and brings the catalogued total to 510 as of August 30, 2022.14
The report matters because it documents the early handoff from the UAP Task Force to AARO, including AARO's July 2022 establishment as the DoD focal point for collection, reporting, analysis, and interagency coordination.16 It also frames the public policy concern around flight safety, possible adversary collection, reduced stigma around reporting, and the need for multi-agency data handling.17
Read it as an official snapshot, not a resolved case database.1 The unclassified report says many reports lack enough detail for high-confidence attribution, some incidents may involve sensor or operator error, more than half of the 366 newly identified reports had initial ordinary characteristics, and additional information remained in the classified version.1
