Subfile A is useful because it preserves the archival handling of UFO material, not just the claims themselves. Its opening page is a U.S. Department of Justice/FBI Central Records Center jacket for case 62-83894, marked Sub A, Serial # 1, and OPEN, with declassification authority derived from the FBI Automatic Declassification Guide issued May 24, 2007.3
The early pages show how public UFO stories moved into Bureau files. One Detroit Division item attaches a May 25, 1960 Detroit Free Press clipping about Grand Blanc, Michigan resident Joseph Perry, whose color slide of a saucer-like object had reportedly drawn attention from Washington, Pentagon personnel, an unidentified flying object group, and a national magazine. The same page identifies the case as UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT; JOSEPH PERRY, GRAND BLANC, MICHIGAN - COMPLAINANT.4
The next scanned item is a Central Research Section newspaper clipping about an American Airlines DC-6 flight from Newark to Detroit. The clipping reports that Capt. Peter Killian and co-pilot John Dee said three bright objects followed the aircraft for about 45 minutes before its landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.5
How UFO Reports Entered 62-HQ-83894
The release metadata places this file inside the larger FBI 62-HQ-83894 case file, which PURSUE describes as containing investigative records, eyewitness testimony, public reports, photographic evidence, technical proposals, convention material, researcher accounts, and media coverage from June 1947 through July 1968.1 The same release description says the PURSUE version presents the complete case file with several newly declassified pages and only minor redactions compared with the partly posted FBI Vault version.1
Subfile A therefore matters as evidence of process. It shows press clippings, public complainants, FBI division routing, central research review, file jackets, handwritten case markings, and received/not-recorded stamps living in the same record stream. For researchers, that makes it a compact example of how mid-century UFO reports could become part of a headquarters file even when the underlying evidence was a newspaper story, a civilian photograph, or a forwarded aviation account.
