Serial 438 is a 40-page FBI Headquarters record from case 62-HQ-83894, released in PURSUE Release 01 as an FBI PDF with no separate incident date or location fields in the row metadata.12 The opening report identifies the subject as "Unidentified Flying Object, Socorro, New Mexico, April 24, 1964," making this serial an FBI-held thread on the Lonnie Zamora Socorro case rather than a generic release index entry.2
The first substantive report is dated May 8, 1964, at Albuquerque. It records that Special Agent D. Arthur Byrnes Jr. was working at the Socorro State Police office late on April 24 when Nep Lopez, a radio operator in the Socorro County Sheriff's Office, came in around 5:45 to 5:50 p.m. Lopez told New Mexico State Police officer M. S. Chavez that Officer Lonnie Zamora had radioed for help after an unknown object had "landed and has taken off."2
Byrnes then went to the site after about 6 p.m., where Zamora, Socorro County Undersheriff Jim Luckie, Sergeant M. S. Chavez, and Officer Ted Jordan were assembled. The report says Byrnes had known Zamora for about five years, regarded him as sober, industrious, and conscientious, and observed him as sober but agitated after the event.2
Byrnes At The Landing Site
The opening report preserves Byrnes's scene observations: four regular rectangular depressions, each roughly sixteen by six inches and about two inches deep; three burned clumps of grass inside the depressions; one burned area outside them; and three shallow circular marks about four inches in diameter in the sandy soil.2 Byrnes also recorded that he saw no other people or objects connected with the incident and that no inhabited dwellings were visible from the area.2
The FBI's Immediate Socorro Thread
Serial 438 matters because it places an FBI agent at the Socorro response within minutes of the initial radio call. The document is not a later clipping or retrospective summary; it records a Bureau agent's near-contemporaneous account of the witness state, the law-enforcement response, and physical marks at the alleged landing site.2
In the larger 62-HQ-83894 set, this gives PURSUE Release 01 a concrete field episode inside a broader FBI headquarters file that the release describes as covering UFO and flying-disc records from June 1947 through July 1968, including investigative records, eyewitness testimony, public reports, photographic material, technical proposals, researcher accounts, and media coverage.1
