Robert Oppenheimer leading the Los Alamos Laboratory where the weapons were designed.[^3] The program operated through three main sites: Oak Ridge for uranium enrichment, Hanford for plutonium production, and Los Alamos for weapon design and assembly.[^4]\n\n## Operations and Impact\n\nThe project employed over 130,000 people and cost nearly $2 billion ($27 billion in 2023). Scientists pursued both uranium enrichment and plutonium production pathways.[^5] The program culminated in the Trinity Test in July 1945 and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.[^6]\n\n## Legacy\n\nThe Manhattan Project transformed warfare and international relations, ushering in the atomic age and Cold War. It established the model for large-scale scientific research and development programs, leading to the creation of the national laboratory system.[^7]\n\n[^1]: [U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, \"Atomic Bomb\"](https://www.usace.army.mil/About/History/Historical-Vignettes/Military-Construction-Combat/113-Atomic-Bomb/); [National Academies Press, \"Evaluation of Manhattan Project Records for Veteran Health and Exposure Assessments\"](https://nap.nationalacademies.org/read/28585/chapter/5).\n\n[^2]: [U.S. Department of Energy, \"August 2, 1939: Einstein's Letter\"](https://www.energy.gov/management/august-2-1939-einsteins-letter).\n\n[^3]: [National Park Service, \"Manhattan Project\"](https://www.nps.gov/mapr/learn/manhattan-project.htm).\n\n[^4]: [National Park Service, \"Manhattan Project\"](https://www.nps.gov/mapr/learn/manhattan-project.htm); [U.S. Department of Energy OpenNet, \"Oak Ridge: Clinton Engineer Works\"](https://www.osti.gov/opennet/manhattan-project-history/Places/OakRidge/oak-ridge.html).\n\n[^5]: [U.S. Department of Energy, \"Manhattan Project Background Information and Preservation Work\"](https://www.energy.gov/lm/manhattan-project-background-information-and-preservation-work).\n\n[^6]: [U.S. Department of Energy OpenNet, \"The Trinity Test, July 16, 1945\"](https://www.osti.gov/opennet/manhattan-project-history/Events/1945/trinity.htm); [National Park Service, \"Manhattan Project\"](https://www.nps.gov/mapr/learn/manhattan-project.htm).\n\n[^7]: [National Park Service, \"Manhattan Project\"](https://www.nps.gov/mapr/learn/manhattan-project.htm); [U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, \"History\"](https://www.energy.gov/science/history).","readingTime":"2 min read"},"relatedRecords":[],"citation":{"canonicalUrl":"https://disclosdex.com/programs/1942-manhattan-project","title":"Manhattan Project","publisher":"Disclosdex","retrievedFrom":"https://disclosdex.com/api/v1/programs/1942-manhattan-project","license":"CC-BY-4.0"}}
